So right now I’ve got the server up and running with cPanel on it. The problem is, there’s not much I can do.
Yes, I have backups from last week, but I REALLY need the latest backups from our old datacenter, and those f*ckers haven’t replied to me in several days. Tomorrow I’m going to be calling them during my lunch break at work or something. Beg to them to let me access the files…
Anyways, I’m down to $260 in my personal bank account, seeing as how I had to spend over $400 of my personal savings to pay for the server’s cPanel license. Also, I have to go buy new pants tomorrow between my classes, since all of my jeans (all four of them) have holes in the crotch.
Anywho, here’s my to-do list for the next couple of days:
-Beg from Burst (our old datacenter)
-Get backups
-Restore TVF
-Restore TVF SQL Database
-Restore all other sites
-Restore email accounts on server
-Tweak /etc/my.cnf file for new server.
-Tweak /etc/csf/csf.*
-Sleep
-Eat
-Get paid
-Work 40+ hours/week
-Get paid just above minimum wage
-Be abused by customers
-Be abused by PMS’ing (no offense to women) bosses
-Get oil change
-Buy pants
-Buy work shirts
-Email current datacenter and see about getting a 4th IP address
-Make girlfriend happy
-Get ACE to read this and Twitter before asking me stupid questions
-42.
Almost there….. I promise!

Well we’re slowly getting there. We have the server and the OS is installed. cPannel which allows you to upload, edit and control stuff is about to be installed. Then we follow the steps below. The good news is from here on Dr Mac has more control over the next bit so it should be faster as we won’t be waiting on outside companies to do their job. That’s the main thing which has taken so long.
- Configure Server
- install bunch of programs
- Rebuild Apache
- Add Users
- Upload Database
- Cross Fingers
- Site’s Online
I’ll try and update the blog as stages are finished but remember to check out http://twitter.com/drmacinyasha for more updates.
All VIP’s will have their accounts extended for all the downtime so you won’t lose out.
Again thanks to everyone for your support and patients
…srsly?

OK, so I got an email from the datacenter saying that the server was setup. So I logged into SSH and DirectAdmin and took around.
The didn’t set it up like I told them too. I asked them SPECIFICALLY to set it up with the latest version of CentOS x86_64 (64-Bit). So what do they install? CentOS 5.2 i686 with an old kernel. Translation: An older version of CentOS 32-Bit. The exact OPPOSITE of what I asked for.
So I emailed them AGAIN and said “Please install CentOS 5.3 x86_64, available here: http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/5/isos/x86_64/ ” and hopefully they’ll get their foots out of their mouths tonight and set everything up.
Crossing fingers…
Anyways, the site WILL be faster when everything’s up. Why? Well, the server’s four-times faster! Let’s compare:
- CPU
Old Server: 3.0Ghz Pentium-D Dual-Core
New Server: 2.4Ghz Intel Core2Quad - RAM
Old Server: 2GB
New Server: 8GB - Hard Drive
Old Server:250 GB
New Server: 500 GB - OS
Old Server: CentOS 5.2 x86_64
New Server: CentOS 5.3 x86_64 - Location
Old Server: Pennsylvania, USA
New Server: Netherlands
And the best part? The new server’s only about $10 more per month.
We’re getting there!

Right, just though I’d update everyone on the progress. We’ve selected a server and paid the first month and the setup fee. Got confirmation back and their currently making our server. As soon as it’s made, which will be sometime tomorrow afternoon, Mac can start installing the necessary programs and then upload the database. All going well with no problems we’ll be back online around this time tomorrow.
All the staff want to thank everyone for being so patient during the last two days and a reminder that all VIP’s will have their accounts extended for the full duration of the downtime.
Ok?

Ok, after visiting about a thousand sites looking for the best deals we’ve found a slightly cheaper server so we don’t need the phone activation I was on about earlier for this one. Mac’s in the process of working out the finer points with the supplier but it will still be a while before all this is complete and the site is back up and running.
All VIP’s will have their accounts extended for the complete duration of the downtime so please don’t worry.
We’re still not fully sure if we will have lost the last 15 hour or so of the site being up. We’re dealing with the ”Data Retrieval Management” on trying to get that back. If we’re unsuccessful all post’s made along with any new accounts created in this time will be lost so we’re really hoping we get that back.
I’ll keep updating as major things happen.
So we’re moving Servers

Sorry for not updating the blog but unfourtionately we’re having trouble confirming the transfer to a new host server. We’re trying to get a server in either Russia, Netherlands, China, or France as copyright laws in these countries are a lot more relaxed. We’ve found a really good cheap one in the Netherlands but they are requiring Phone Activation via sms which we’re having trouble with as none of us are in the Netherlands. If someone reading this has a SMS-capable Belgium or Netherlands (+316 or +324 country code) phone, please reply or send an email to drmacinyasha -at- cia -dot- com!
Latest Downtime and Major Changes
Apr 14th
I’m going to try and update this every hour or so and keep you informed of the progress.
The hosting company we owed money to did a check on our site and found it was warez which they don’t allow. I’m guessing as we owed them money they decided to check the site. This is really annoying as we don’t even store files on the server. All the copyrighted material is stored on Rapidshare, Megaupload, Netload etc.
”I am sorry but distribution of pirated content or facilitating pirated content distribution/download is not compliant with our DMCA even if the files are not directly hosted on the server.”
Mac, Ace and myself are working as fast as we can to find and set up a new server to have The Viper Files back up and running as soon as possible however this will take a while.
Potential Problems:
We make a back-up of the site every 24 hours but as it is about 15 hours since the last back-up all that information, new members and posts may be lost. We’re working on trying to get access to make a back-up.
Well this is definatley not going to help our current money problems as we’ll have to pay the old outstanding bill and now this new one also.
Potential Benefits:
One of the benefits of this is we can now use this opturnity to move to a better more relaxed country such as France, Netherlands or Russia where copyright laws are not as strong. We’ve being planning this for some time but havn’t got around to doing it.
Updates:
I’ll keep you informed as best we can of the stages we’re at by updating the blog. For more detailed step by step updates you can follow Dr Macinyasha on twitter

Ouch!
Apr 9th
Alright, so after emailing back and forth with our datacenter, they’ve narrowed down our downtime to two main causes:
1) The CPU was overheating. Yup, even after three new hardware sets, the CPU kept overheating, and now there’s a new heatsink and cooling fan on it.
2) We were running out of swap space. My guess? MySQL was over-doing it. So now I have to figure out how to optimize the server’s memory usage and possibly get more RAM for it. Owwies!
Aaaand I’m going to be yelling at ACE to fix the Ads on here and I’m probably going to have to change the ads on the forum back to AdBrite since AdSense isn’t working right.
