Staff Changes
Mar 22nd
Alright, so we have a couple of changes in our staff!
- ACE and Mr Happy are now our two new Super Moderators, meaning they have quite a few admin powers and can help out a lot more with things like banning malware/phishing posters, keeping the forum up, etc.
- Joephus and Rich'd 1337 have both unfortunately been demoted. Let's thank them both for their months of appreciated hard work being moderators on TVF!
- We're looking for new Moderators. This doesn't mean you should PM or beg anyone to be a moderator. Just be an active, friendly member of the community, help with Requests and Help Desk submissions, etc. and we'll notice you, don't worry! Though if you do go and beg to be a staff member, odds are you just blew any chance you had of becoming a moderator. I can't stress this enough!
On a side note, we've been having issues with PayPal lately (they didn't like our old XXX section and have been limiting our accounts, and I'm trying to fight them off) so if you'd like to donate and sign up for VIP status, send me a PM and I'll let you know what options we have right now. Hopefully we'll get PayPal straightened out or find a very nice work-around of some sort, more details soon!

Sorry for the downtime folks.
I gave the server a reboot and we are back in busniess. Site might be running a little slow for a bit. Please bare with us. Hope we dont run in to any other problems for the rest of the night.

Up!
Mar 18th
Woohoo! 25 hours of uptime with virtually no problems! A few database errors here and there (nothing a few clicks in phpMyAdmin can’t fix) and had to tweak mod_security to be compatible with vBulletin, but other than that everything seems to be working OK!
Our backup scripts are working beautifully, and the only thing I don’t have running right now is the old firewall. Still holding off for a bit on that one. Also, once I get some issues with our bank and PayPal fixed, I’ll be talking with IPS (the manufacturer of our forum’s software) to try and figure out why the page-load times on the forum indexes (topic lists) are so long.
If you run into a Database error, PHP error, or really long load-times somewhere other than the forum indexes, please comment here and tell me exactly WHEN you got the error, and what page you were on, and I’ll look into it.
Still Down

From the looks of things the server is still down as you may all know that. Mac is really working hard on trying to fix the server as well as the forum. We are happy that you guys are sticking with us through this.
I just want everyone to know that when this is all set and done and the site is back to normal and we dont have any server problems, I would like you to thank mac for all that he has done for the site and the server. He does all this because he cares and he wants everyone to enjoy the site. He has put it alot of man hours and were sure there will be hours more to come. So if you see him around please thank him for it. A little donation to him would go a long way.
What’s going on
Mar 16th
Alright, so I’m starting to pull my hair out here…
After everything’s said and done, it seems that not only was the firewall messing up everything, but now there’s something up with MySQL. So now I’m talking with our datacenter in Pennsylvania, CPanel in Texas (The manufacturer of our server’s control panel), and InvisionPower in Virginia (The manufacturer of our forum).
I wish everything would work… Right now, I’m debating whether or not to do a complete re-installation of our server’s operating system, which *could* solve the problems if it’s being caused by a bad installation of MySQL or something, but it would also mean dozens of man-hours put to waste, and dozens more yet to be spent.
Summary

Quoted from http://www.theviperfiles.com/News_and_Announcements_f17/Blog_and_Downtime_t49120.html
Alright, so here’s the basic breakdown:
One of our most powerful firewalls, CSF+LFD, was freaking out and for some reason would pop the CPU usage to 100% and the serverload to 20+
(basic translation of serverload: Linux serverload is x number of processes waiting to get into the CPU per second on average over the past minute, five minutes, or 15 minutes. I’ll be talking about the past minute average, usually. So 20 means that on average, about 20 processes were waiting in queue to get through the CPU every second. Normally, you want to keep that down to under 10, and if you’ve got the cash, you want to get that down to under 5. Until lately, we were under 1, averaging about 0.8)
Now, we were averaging about 0.8 on our server because we’ve got a Pentium-D server with 2GB of RAM, when we probably could’ve survived on a lot less, that is, until I cranked up the server’s security by enabling suPHP and suEXEC, meaning that instead of Apache and PHP running as “nobody”, they run specifically as the website that they’re serving, meaning that if someone hacked Macinyasha.net somehow, they couldn’t backdoor into TVF. All well and great, but that also makes PHP a little more intensive and makes it so we can’t use eAccelerator anymore. Oh well.
But things started getting kinky because the server would peak 100% CPU for seemingly no reason, and would become completely unresponsive. So we’d have to get it rebooted, and of course our datacenter would take like 15 minutes to do that. Then it started doing it more and more often… So I started talking with our datacenter to try and diagnose it. They moved our hard drive into a new server to try and eliminate any hardware issues, but it still happened. So a day later, we figured out it was our firewall, but for some reason, they had changed our root password and messed with CPanel’s license, when we never asked them to.
Now we get to the REAL headache.
The server had been originally purchased through a reseller (Ralph Chaplain, look him up and you’ll see why he went out of business) and then got transferred to us when that reseller closed up shop. The server was then placed in Vipersnipes’ name, and the account used Viper3773’s email. Totally weird. But the problem was, neither Viper3773 nor I knew this, and recently, Vipersnipes quit. (That’s right, Vipersnipes is gone. Look at his account, he’s a member now.) We didn’t know what was going on, our datacenter didn’t know who I was (because obviously Vipersnipes and I have different names, phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, etc.) and once we FINALLY got them to understand everything that was going on, and updated our billing info to reflect me as the “owner” (sorry, but Viper3773 is only 16, and I’m 18, so it has to be my name on the line.) and THEN they were willing to change our root password back and get everything up and working.
Now the downside… Since Vipersnipes was in charge of the billing and didn’t keep anyone else in the loop, our datacenter wasn’t getting fully paid, so we kinda have a big bill with them. Like, enough to buy myself two or three netbooks (that should give you an idea). So we’re on the financial crunch since our main financial admin is now gone, didn’t bring anyone up to speed, and now we’re owing some cash. Aaand the crappy economy gets worse every day.
So, people, please. If you’ve got the money, please donate and help us out! Remember, not only do you help to keep us running, but you also get VIP access on our forum, top-response time for requests (if you think Mr Happy does a lot of work for all the requests in the public section, he’s even faster working for VIPs!) and tons of VIP-only downloads, plus the dozen or so VIP accounts we have! And we’re adding more Rapidshare accounts every month, so that issue of people maxing out the accounts is slowly going bye-bye!
Alright, enough of me blabbing, here’s the summary for you TL;DR’ers:
1) Our firewall was f*cking things up.
2) Datacenter was having a hissy fit over the billing info being messed up.
3) Vipersnipes is gone.
4) We’ve got a considerable bill with the datacenter.
5) We need donators now more than ever!
Wha-bam.
Sooo…
Mar 15th
So we kinda-sorta got the server working, still waiting on our datacenter to restore full access, but we’re opening up the forum. From the looks of things, our best and most powerful firewall might have been causing the server lockups. Trust me, I’m looking into EVERY possibility here… And yes, tech support does work weekends.
Up but not out…
Mar 14th
So we got the server back up by disabling one of our firewalls, but now it seems that the *awesome* technician at the datacenter somehow changed our server’s root password AND made CPanel think it’s not licensed, so right now I’m on the phone trying to get that fixed. I put TVF in Offline Mode so that once I do get CPanel back up and running, we can take a backup and then reinstall the server’s OS.

Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about the server or anything. But our datacenter’s workers are being… Pricks. Haven’t replied to me in about an hour, and all I asked them to do is try to reboot… What it looks like we might have to do is rebuild the operating system after I get into the server and backup all of our customers and websites.
